The main drivers are Reels taking share from feed posts (Reels ER is lower but reach is higher), and Meta's algorithm prioritizing paid distribution over organic reach. Methodology
- Sample
- 50,000 public Instagram accounts, stratified random sample across 10 niches and 5 follower tiers. Accounts under 1K followers and private accounts excluded. No brand or meme aggregator accounts.
- Date range
- Posts published between January 1 and March 31, 2026. Minimum 12 posts per account in the window to qualify. Posts under 24 hours old excluded.
- Formula
- ER = (likes + comments + saves + shares) รท reach ร 100%. Where reach is unavailable, impressions are used as fallback.
- What counts as niche
- Accounts are niche-tagged by their primary content topic based on the most frequent 50 post captions. Mixed-topic accounts bucketed as 'Lifestyle (general)'.
